The MR Escape Room is a cutting-edge mixed reality experience that transforms real-world spaces into interactive puzzle environments. Developed in Unity 6 with advanced Quest 3 capabilities, the experience leverages passthrough technology to seamlessly blend the player’s physical surroundings with digital elements. Players navigate through zone-based progression, unlocking challenges progressively while interacting with virtual objects using natural hand gestures and controller input. The application employs spatial anchoring to persistently place virtual furniture and quest items in the real environment, with local data persistence ensuring that scene configurations are saved and restored across play sessions. This adaptive approach enables the game to accommodate diverse physical spaces—from living rooms to dedicated play areas—by allowing custom scene setup during initialization. With optimized performance for standalone Quest 3 hardware, the project demonstrates expertise in real-time mixed reality interaction design, spatial computing, and narrative progression through environmental storytelling.

The challenge
The hard parts of building MR Escape Room
4 problems we had to solve, from AR tracking, performance, design and more.
- 01 / 04AR tracking
Anchors that stay put
One of the primary technical challenges was achieving reliable spatial anchoring across diverse real-world environments while maintaining consistent virtual object placement.
- 02 / 04Performance
Passthrough, hands and physics at once
Balancing real-time performance with the computational demands of passthrough video, hand tracking, and physics simulations required careful optimization and profiling.
- 03 / 04Design
Progression that feels natural in MR
Designing an intuitive zone-based progression system that feels natural in mixed reality—where physical and digital worlds coexist—demanded innovative interaction design to prevent player confusion.
- 04 / 04Data
Saves that survive interruptions
Managing local data persistence for furniture placement while handling edge cases like session interruptions and environment changes added complexity to the save/load architecture.
